Background
ECMWF is contributing to the Africa–EU Space Partnership Programme by taking a leading role in Strengthening Early Warning in Africa (SEWA) alongside EUMETSAT and the African Union Commission (AUC), and funded by the European Commission's DG for International Partnerships (DG INTPA).
SEWA started in January 2025, and will develop space-based services and applications to strengthen early warning systems for hazardous weather and climate-related events in sub-Saharan Africa. With this Action, ECMWF also contributes to the UN EW4All Initiative. Throughout the implementation, African Regional Climate Centers designated by WMO are foreseen to play a central role in SEWA in their area of responsibility.
